JIA JUAN LI (b. 1960, Hangzhou)
is an alumna of the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute and Central Academy of Fine Arts; where she graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1986 and Master of Fine Arts in 1991 respectively. In 1996 she moved to France to study at Ecole d’Art d’Aix-en-Provence on a scholarship by the French government and went on to win numerous accolades in the years that followed. In 2011, she held a major retrospective show at Today Art Museum in Beijing and another important show at the Guiyang Art Museum in Guizhou in 2012. In the same year she was also awarded the “Médaille d'Or Peinture Figurative”, the gold prize for figurative painting in the annual “Exhibition of Société Nationale des Beaux Arts” at the Louvre Museum in Paris.
GAO YI (b. 1987, Nanjing)
is based in Los Angeles, California, where she obtained her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Otis College of Art and Design in 2012. She attributes her passion for art to her teacher at a community after–school centre (called the “Children’s Palace”) in her hometown in China, where she found freedom to express her creativity in a non-rigid environment. Her paintings, which use traditional media such as handmade paper and Chinese pigments, depict her emotions and observation towards her own experiences and environment.
