CHAN Yu

Chan Yu was born in Chongqing, China in 1982 to Hong Kong parents and grew up in Hong Kong since he was two years old. He moved to China in order to study at the renowned Sichuan Fine Arts Institute based in Chongqing and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2005 followed by a Master of Fine Arts in 2008. Since working with Connoisseur Contemporary his work has been exhibited and sold with great success at international art fairs in Basel, Miami and Dubai. As an emerging artist of the 80s generation, Chan Yu displays tremendous power in his work because of his incredible innate sense for colours and grasp on complexity. More than just being pop art-like, Chan Yu’s portraits of famous, iconic personalities present the artist’s concept of “absence of the self and presence of the image” [Chan Yu, 2008, Connoisseur Contemporary] and the infinite possibilities and meanings that can be derived from the intersection of his images and what they represent.
